Obituary For William Quwane Watkins

William who was loving called Quwane or Gemini or Q-Rock was born to the late William Watkins and Eunice (Thompson) Hill on June 21, 1974, in Newark, NJ. Sadly, he departed this life on March 2, 2022, in Detroit, Michigan.

Quwane received his elementary education in the Newark public school system. He graduated from his beloved Irvington (NJ) High School. He also attended Essex County College. Quwane worked in the food service industry, but his primary profession was music. Quwane began singing at a very early age. He sang all day and all night. In high school, Quwane and five friends formed the vocal group, VI Deep. They were not only members of a group but, brothers who forged lifelong friendships. Quwane performed nationally and internationally in choirs, always singing praises to the Lord. In addition to singing, Quwane enjoyed writing, arranging, and producing music for himself and others. Quwane had some medical issues in 2015 that quieted his voice but did not silence him. He continued to write, travel, and spend time with family and friends.

Quwane had Jesus Joy! He loved the Lord with all his heart. He trusted the Lord. He learned early on from his maternal grandmother to make Jesus the center of everything in his life. Whenever he moved to a new city, he was sure to immediately find a church home where he would instantly begin to work in ministry. In Detroit, he served at Greater Faith Assembly.

Quwane loved his family and friends who became family. He had special relationships with his aunts, uncles, and cousins. Quwane never met a stranger. He was pure joy and sunshine. Quwane was always smiling and would find a way to make you laugh. He would certainly greet you with a full lipped kiss and a warm hug. He appreciated music, especially, reggae, gospel, hip hop, and R&B. Quwane embraced Caribbean culture. If you called him, he would more than likely be watching a West African drama. He enjoyed cooking and excitedly shared his pescatarian meals. His ministry was on Marco Polo where he engaged regularly with family and friends.

Quwane was proceeded in death by his grandparents and his fathers, William Watkins and Rodell Hill; He leaves to cherish the memories of his beautiful spirit: his loving mother, Eunice Hill; sister, Amira Hill-Yancy; niecy-poo, Sloane Olivia Ann; aunts, DeBorah Nehemiah, Juanita (Hezekiah) Harmon, Geraldine (Hence) Cole, Alma Bland, Judy Hill, Brenda Hill, and Jean Sampson; uncles, Cater Thompson, Lucian (Alecia) Thompson, Dion Nehemiah, Alfus Johnson, Thomas Watkins, James Pride, and Lyndon Brown; Original 4 cousins, Lucian and Stephon; cousins who were like brothers, Tajshiek (Shari), Savion (Vashuna), and Tariq (Nancy); cousins, Lucian, Jasmine, Erin, Tyia, Amani, Tahira, Adam, and Shiloh; caring cousins, Alicia, LaShawn, and Kim; VI Deep members, Malik, Randy, Melvin, and Jean; godson, Christopher; and a host of relatives and friends who were blessed by his time with us and love him very much.
