Obituary For Walter Neal Harris III

Walter N. Harris III was born in 1957 to Walter Harris Jr and Frances A. Harris. From the moment he entered the world, it was clear he was more than one thing. Over the course of his life, he embodied many roles, exceptional soldier, brilliant teacher, entrepreneur, loyal friend; but he was also a skilled musician with a deep appreciation for people and humor.

A proud product of Detroit Public Schools, graduating from Chadsey High School in 1974, Walter later returned to DPS to teach. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminology from the University of Detroit.

Walter honorably served his country as a U.S. Army Airborne Infantry Officer, attaining the rank of Captain. After completing his military service, he continued a career in public service as a State of Michigan Department of Corrections parole and probation agent, a U.S. State Department Diplomatic Security Officer, and an Analyst for the Detroit Police Department.

In his final days, Walter spent his time doing the things he loved most: making strangers laugh, washing his car, tending to his lawn, and volunteering at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center.

Walter leaves behind three children: Robert N. Harris II; Esther F. Flowers, and Sonya N. Harris-Oguzor. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Chinwe, Uche, Danielle, and Rose.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Harris Jr. and Frances A. Harris, and his older brother, Mindret Spencer Sr. He is survived by two sisters, Harriet Harris and Nancy Tolson, his beloved uncle, Robert N. Harris, affectionately known as Uncle Sonny, and his nieces and nephews.

A military service will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

A memorial service will take place on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home.

I want to extend my condolences and deepest sympathy to the Harris family on the passing of my friend, Walter "Wally" Harris III. Walter and I grew up together on Wykes St in Detroit were friends from elementary school to high school and beyond. We lost contact over the years but reconnected last spring. It was a blessing to talk with him and recall some of the great times we had together especially our Sr. year in high school. From the "Pre Graduation" party at the beginning of the school year to the Sr. picnic at the end of year and all of the fun times in between. I didn't always agree with Walter's direct and sometimes over the top opinions but I always felt he was the friend I could be honest and truthful with at all times. I will miss him dearly. To the family, I pray that God comfort you during this time and that you keep his memory in your heart as I will. David Addison and family.

Bob and Aunt Grace, Wally's grandmother visited his family during his developmental years and found him to have the gift of a quiet demeanor , which proved especially useful in his career path. We last saw Wally dutifully caring for his Mother, Frances at a family gathering in Detroit. We briefly met his daughters to whom we extend our condolences, as well as his sisters Nancy , Harriet and grandchildren. Love, cousin Joyce and Bob
