Rosa Mae Jemison was born April 22, 1929, in Memphis, Tennessee to Katherine Harris and Howard Horton. Rosa brought joy to all who knew her throughout her remarkable life.
Rosa was a proud graduate of Manassas High School in Memphis, where her lovely melodious voice first gained recognition. Her beautiful singing voice would remain one of her most cherished gifts throughout her life.
In her early years, Rosa married Jesse Jemison and relocated to Plainfield, New Jersey, where they built their life together until his passing in 1971. Following this loss, Rosa’s resilient spirit led her to Detroit, Michigan, where she established a new chapter in her life.
Professionally, Rosa enjoyed a fulfilling career with Michigan Bell/AT&T, where her warm personality and dedication earned her the respect of colleagues and customers alike.
Rosa was a woman of deep faith who shared her gift of song as an active and devoted choir member. Her passion for life extended to her love of travel, dancing, and enthusiastically participating in card games at her local Senior Center. Those who knew Rosa will remember her as a lively, vivacious woman with a giving heart and supportive, sweet spirit that touched countless lives.
Rosa is survived by her loving brother Eric Horton and sister Margaret Horton, and numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Jemison, brothers Edmond Jackson, Cattie Jackson, and Howard Horton, and sister Adrienne Seay Luie.
Rosa’s vibrant spirit, generous heart, and beautiful voice will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, faith, and joy will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
