Obituary For Louis Edsel Maitland

In Loving Memory of Louis Edsel Maitland II

Louis Edsel Maitland II, aged 69, of Redford, Michigan, passed away on May 7th, 2024. He was born on July 10, 1954, in Detroit, MI, to June Barbara Maitland (Beller) and Louis Edsel Maitland.

Louis was a man known for his creative, unique, and special personality. He was truly one of a kind. He had a special gift for making up nicknames that not only fit perfectly but stuck for a lifetime (whether you wanted them to or not!)

He was an electrician by trade, where he was known for his expertise in particularly difficult, seemingly impossible jobs.

Beyond his professional achievements, Louis was a passionate musician. He played the guitar and piano, sharing his love for music with everyone around him. Louis was also a remarkable storyteller. The way he described a person or setting would transport you directly into the story, making you feel as if you were experiencing it firsthand.

Louis was a collector of art and unique oddities. He creatively displayed his treasures in his home, which he aptly named "The Lou-seum". His eclectic taste and artistic eye brought vibrancy and personality to his living space, reflecting his own colorful character.

Louis also had a love for clothing, dressing up, and looking good. He took pride in his appearance and had a keen sense of style, always making a statement with his outfits.

Louis was a great athlete with a particular love for biking and being on the water. He could often be found riding his bike with his lifelong friend Kathy at his favorite place, Kensington Metropark. He also had a deep appreciation for good food, with his favorites being buttercream cake and blueberry pie. It was a joy to cook for Louis. He was always ready with over-the-top reactions and praise for whoever cooked for him, making every meal a memorable experience.

Throughout his life, Louis followed his own values and was not swayed by societal pressures or norms. His life was a testament to living authentically, remaining true to oneself and unwavering love for his family.

Louis is survived by his children Elizabeth, Rachel (Steven), and Amanda (Brian). He was also a loving grandfather to Ezra. He is preceded in death by his brother Thomas Maitland. He also leaves behind his siblings Pamela Lich, Robert (Laurie) Maitland and Barbara Kamil and numerous friends who were like family to him.

He was a loving father and a proud grandfather. His family meant the world to him. His legacy of love, creativity and self-expression will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A celebration of Louis’s life will be held on June 8th at noon at Barbara Kamil’s residence.

Louis Edsel Maitland II will be deeply missed, but his spirit and the memories of his love will remain with us forever.

Some of the favorite memories I have of Lou happened when he would drive his black BMW with the shark fin on the hood to my apartment to pick me up for the day. I would see the car coming down the street and would run to meet him. The car would be full of incense, trinkets and toys, overfull with clothes and tools in the backseats, a bike on the rack and there he would be, with the sunroof open, the wind blowing his hair above his headband, and the newest pair of shades on. My love, my friend, together we would always be young and free , in those days filled with music and new adventures. And I will always run to meet my Lou, whether in this world , or the next. He gave me his time, and time is love. Missing Lou with all my heart.
