Obituary For Josef Alfonso Baker, Jr.

Josef Alfonso Baker, Jr.
December 1, 1937 – June 25, 2025

With deep love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Josef Alfonso Baker, Jr., affectionately know as Butch, peacefully departed this life on June 25, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born on December 1, 1937, Josef lived a full and meaningful life rooted in family. He was the devoted husband of Joann Baker for 57 loving years. Together, they built a warm and caring home filled with laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love for their five children: Terrance Baker, Robin Scott (who preceded him in death), Laurie Baker-Broaden, Lynn Williams, and Desmond Baker.

Butch was a proud grandfather to Deatrice Scott, Dion Readus, Brittney Thomas-Watson, Deandre Baker, and Reginald Thomas, II. (who preceded him in death), Mikayla Hern, Emily Baker, Davariz Broaden, Dior Scott, Makayla Jones (who preceded him in death), and Myles Baker. His grandchildren loved him, and he took great joy in boasting about all of their accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Josef Baker, Sr., and Queenie Victoria Baker, as well as his siblings: Bernadette Clancy, Venita Roney, Sharon Baker, and Bertrand Baker, and by his cherished daughter, Robin Scott.

He is survived by his two remaining siblings, Lamont Baker and Delaine Cochran, who will deeply miss his humor, wisdom, and enduring spirit.

Josef had a gift for bringing people together and making everyone feel like family; he truly was the life of the party, especially during his legendary basement gatherings. He loved music, storytelling, and making sure everyone had a full plate and an even fuller glass.

One of his greatest joys was being in the kitchen, where he perfected the art of making his famous biscuits — flaky, buttery, and always made with love. For those who were lucky enough to taste them, they weren’t just biscuits — they were a piece of home.

Butch's warmth, generosity, and unwavering love touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family welcomes your thoughts, prayers, and memories as we celebrate a life well-lived. Plans for a celebration of life gathering will be announced.

In place of flowers, the family asks that you honor Josef’s memory by sharing a story about him or baking some biscuits for someone you love.

Rest in peace, Dad. You were our rock and our hero.
