Obituary For Jane Elizabeth Smith

Jane Smith, faithful daughter, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, faithful friend, and lifelong servant to her community, passed away peacefully in her home in Livonia, Michigan, surrounded by her loving husband. She lived a life defined by compassion, dedication, and deep love for those around her.

Jane was born on August 12, 1936, in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, the beloved daughter of William Houston Stewart and Dorothy Grace (Brown) Stewart, and was accompanied by her older brother, William H. Stewart Jr. She graduated from Munhall High School in 1954, a member of the rife team and went on to attend Bethany College in West Virginia, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. She was president of her sorority, Phi Mu. Driven by a passion for helping others, she completed her Masters of Social Work at Case Western Reserve University on June 12, 1963, in Cleveland, Ohio.

On September 14, 1963, Jane married the love of her life, Wayne Dean Smith, at Central Christian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After their marriage, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they began building a life together grounded in faith, family, and service.

Jane was the proud mother of two daughters, Kelley Fern (Smith) Whalen (Tim) and Erin Oakley (Smith) Hanson (Mark). Nothing brought her more joy than her grandchildren: Tess Hanson, Eden Hanson, Phoebe Whalen, Timothy Whalen III, Marc Hanson, Grace Whalen, and Lyla Hanson. She treasured every moment spent with them, celebrating their accomplishments, nurturing their dreams, and surrounding them with unconditional love.

A dedicated member of the Girl Scouts for over 30 years, Jane served in many roles—scout, leader, camp director, professional, and mentor. Her impact was felt across generations of young women whom she guided with patience, creativity, and genuine care.

Jane was also an active member of Memorial Church of Christ in Livonia, Michigan, where she participated in women’s groups, prayer groups, and generously cooked for large gatherings. She was a dedicated member of the church for over 50 years, and her faith was a steady and uplifting presence in her life and the lives of others.

One of Jane’s greatest joys was spending summers at her cottage in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Surrounded by nature, she found peace in the woods, along the shores, and under the wide northern skies. She also loved camping, traveling, sewing, and quilting hobbies that reflected her appreciation for beauty, adventure, and the simple joys of life. She sewed gowns, nighties, and Bible covers for her family and friends, sharing her talent and love through every creation. Throughout her lifetime, Jane poured her creativity and generosity into crocheting and quilting. She lovingly crocheted countless hats for her grandchildren, each one stitched with warmth and affection. She also crocheted many hats for donation, ensuring that those in need felt the comfort of her kindness during difficult times. Some of her happiest moments were spent playing games with her grandchildren—sharing laughter, building memories, and strengthening the loving bond she valued so deeply.

Jane will be remembered for her warm heart, her unwavering kindness, and the legacy of love she leaves with her family, her friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit lives in the memories shared, the lives she touched, and the family she adored so deeply.
