James “Jim” Roger Dye, 81, passed away on July 16, 2026.

Jim was born on December 16, 1944, in London, England, to Paul David and Myfanwy "Pat" Dye. At just two and a half years old, Jim experienced the loss of his father, Paul, who passed away on June 25, 1947.

Jim’s life became part of history at an early age. On February 10, 1946, he and his mother traveled to the United States aboard the Queen Mary on its first post-war “War Bride” voyage, beginning a new chapter and a new life in America.

Jim married Debbie (Banning) in 1968, and together they had three daughters: Misty, Mandy, and Mindy. Jim and Debbie later divorced after 22 years of marriage. After retiring and moving to Michigan, Jim married Francis (Watroba) in 2012, and they remained married until his passing.

Jim was a gifted craftsman who loved building things with his hands. He had the remarkable ability to look at a picture of almost anything and figure out how to make it himself. His talent, creativity, and determination were evident in everything he built.

Jim was an extremely hard worker who took great pride in providing for his family and was never without a job. He began his career at Prestige Cabinets before working at StarCraft. He later worked as a contractor alongside Jim Wiley, helping build homes throughout the Independence area. Jim eventually joined Hackney, where he started on the welding line. Through his dedication, strong work ethic, and leadership, he worked his way up to foreman and ultimately became plant superintendent. Later in his career, he shared his knowledge and skills with students through Tri-County, teaching the building trades and inspiring the next generation of craftsmen. His patience, experience, and willingness to mentor others allowed his knowledge and love of building to live on through the students he taught. He eventually retired from Tri-County.

Jim is survived by his wife, Francis Dye; his daughters, Misty Frith, Mandy (Adam) Sikes, and Mindy (Sam) Blackard; his stepchildren, Andrew Grysiewicz, Jillian Watrona, and Joseph Grysiewicz; six grandchildren, Ashley, Serena, Brandon, Kyle, Drew, and Lauren; and one great-grandchild, Bentley.

From his extraordinary beginnings in England to the family and life he built in America, Jim’s story was one of resilience, skill, and determination. He will be remembered for his gifted hands, his ability to create almost anything, and the lasting legacy he leaves through his family and the students he taught.
