The first time that I met James was in the early spring of 2007. I'd gone over to his apartment along with his sister, Pam, niece & my future wife. Eboni, and his great niece and nephew, Lashonte and Justin. He gave us a ride on his boat and he let each of us take turns driving it. What stands out to me was his beaming smile and the joy that he had from spending time with his family. He treated his family members as if they were his children and he lavished them with love. Later, when I started graduate school at Michigan State University, I found out that James was a Spartan alumnus; the two of us bonded over our shared love of all things Michigan State (especially Spartans Football!) and we shared more than a few phone calls fretting about the state of those Mark Dantonio-coached teams. We also shared a love of the NFL; James was a diehard Detroit Lion fan and me, a diehard Dallas Cowboy fan. We teased and taunted each other yearly over the fortunes of our teams but it was always good natured fun and games. I really appreciated those Facetime calls and the friendly banter that went with them. The most special set of memories that I have of James is when he and his friend Kenny flew to Arizona to take part in me and Eboni's wedding. Though James had been ill, NOTHING was going to keep him from walking Eboni down the isle. I believe that this example just confirms James' feelings of love and duty to family. I remember how happy he was at our wedding and when he signed our marriage license, he beamed with all of the pride and joy that a father would have at signing his child's wedding license, even though he was Eboni's uncle. This just confirms what I've always known; he looked at Eboni like a daughter and I will forever appreciate James for taking the time to attend our special day. Though James may be gone, his spirit lives on in the way that he would want us to love and care for family and friends. He would want us to experience the fullness of life and all that it has to offer. He would want us to especially get outside of our comfort zone and really LIVE life the way that it should be lived and experienced. James lived a life of self-sacrifice for his family and friends because he loved them. The best way that we can emulate that is to live in the same way. I love you Uncle James. Till we meet again....

Always my favorite uncle, James was a brilliant, compassionate, loving, humble, funny, and resilient man. Uncle James was the closest connection that I had to my mother, especially after her passing six years ago. After my father passed away several years prior to my mother, Uncle James became a father figure. Therefore, it was a blessing to have him by my side on my wedding day. When I visited him a couple of months ago, we laughed, cried, and reminisced about the stories that he and my mom had shared with me over the years. There is not enough I can say about Uncle James, and this post only touches the surface of how I feel about him. He was a truly amazing human being! Uncle James will be forever loved and missed. His wish has been granted. He is resting with my mama and grandma now.β€οΈπŸ•Š
