OBITUARY

Herbert Hughes Cox was born April 23, 1946 in Dadeville, AL to the late Lillie Ruth Cox Heard and Willie

Joe Pogue.

Herbert graduated from Council High School in 1964. Later he moved to Detroit, MI where he met the

love of his life Rita Smith. Herbert and Rita exchanged vows on August 26, 1967. To this union three

children were born, Herbert Cox, Jr., Kimberly Cox and Nathan Cox. Herb as he was called enjoyed

spending time with family, spoiling the grandchildren and great grandchildren, working in his yard

listening to blues and watching sports. Herb never meet a stranger, he would just walk up to you and have

the best conversation as though you were the best of friends. Herb was called PaPa by all the kids and

young people he came in contact with and they were all treated as if they were his own.

On July 10, 2010 after 34 years of service at Cassen’s Transport, Herb retired and took off the watch and

spent the rest of his days with his lovely and devoted wife. Herb always stated he didn’t need a watch

because he had nothing but time.

On Sunday, August 31, 2025 at 9:52 P.M. Herb gained his wings and was called home to be with the Lord.

Preceding him in death was his Son, Herbert Cox, Jr., his mother Lillie Ruth Heard, his father Willie Joe

Pogue and his sister Jo Carolyn Ross.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories to his beautiful wife of 58 years Rita Cox of Southfield, MI, his

daughter Kimberly Cox of Oak Park, MI, His son Nathan (Tomika) Cox of Detroit, MI, two brothers,

Willie (Becky) Cameron of Nashville, TN, Stanley Cameron of Dadeville, AL, one sister, Kathy (Derrick)

Russell of Dadeville, AL, two brother-inlaws, Leslie (Louise) Smith of Mesa, AZ, Darryl (Sheila) Smith of

Gwinn, MI, six grandchildren Tina, Ariana (Diallo), Shaena, Devontae (Demi), Cameron, Daijah, four

bonus grandchildren Shaharra, Troy, Cody and Vincent, eight great-grandchildren, Zuri, Diallo II, Zion,

Santi, Santana, Zoie, Dustin and Asher, daughter In-law Jacqueline Cox of Redford, MI, two aunts,

Bessie Stone of Atlanta, GA, Lillian (Ted) Williams of Greensboro, NC, two uncles, Bobby Cox of

Dadeville, AL, Sanders (Marie) Cox of Camphill, AL, nieces and nephews, Steven (Roxanne) Cameron,

Neiah Heard (Christopher), LaDerick Russell, Tomekia Cameron, Tymon Belyeu, Cienna Banks, Jr. and

Xaria Cameron. Herb leaves a host of many more aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
