Franco Chico Fontana, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 2, 2026, in Redford, Michigan. Born on June 29, 1950, in Italy, Franco lived a life rich with passion, dedication, and love for his family and community.
Franco’s journey began in Italy, where he was born and raised before immigrating to the United States. On October 14, 1994, he proudly became a U.S. citizen—a milestone that symbolized his deep commitment to building a life filled with opportunity and connection. His Italian heritage remained an integral part of his identity and was most evident in his love for cooking and sharing meals with those around him.
A talented chef by trade and by heart, Franco spent the last 25 years of his career at Saint John's Banquet Center. Prior to this role, he owned a bar and restaurant and served as a chef at the renowned "Topper" Restaurant in Dearborn, Michigan—a highlight of his culinary career. Franco’s skill in the kitchen was matched only by his joy in bringing people together through food. Whether preparing meals professionally or hosting family gatherings at home, he found immense happiness in creating dishes that nourished both body and soul.
Franco’s passions extended far beyond the kitchen. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished annual deer camp trips with friends and fishing excursions with his wife and family. He found peace and fulfillment in nature—whether hunting game or casting a line into tranquil waters. These moments were not just hobbies but opportunities to slow down and connect with his favorite people.
Family was at the center of Franco’s life. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 25 years, Janet Simko; his daughter Destiny Fontana; stepchildren Kimberly Krajny (James Wagganer) and John Krajny (Jamie Krajny); as well as nine cherished grandchildren: Janie, Klohie, Johnny, Dylan, Hunter, Chase, Brody, Bay, and Z'akhariel Franco. He was predeceased by his stepdaughter Michelle Krajny but carried her memory close to his heart.
Known for his caring nature and gift for conversation, Franco had an extraordinary ability to relate with people from all walks of life. Whether sharing stories over a Budweiser or engaging in lively discussions, he left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his many talents and accomplishments, Franco will be remembered for the warmth he brought into every room he entered. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched—through meals shared around tables filled with laughter or quiet moments spent enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.
May Franco's memory bring comfort to those who knew him best and inspire others to live with the same passion for family, friendship, and life’s simple joys. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 17, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM at DeLuca's Restaurant 27424 Warren. A time to Celebrate the life and memory of our beloved "Chef" Franco.
